Get to know silicone

Different countries have different standards, and silicone products must meet standards that are considered safe for human use when in contact with food.

For example, in the US and Australia, the minimum standard for silicone products is "FDA" testing (Food and Drug Administration standards).

With the exception of Germany and France, silicone products sold in Europe must comply with European food contact regulations – 1935/2004/EC.

Silicone products sold in Germany and France must comply with the most stringent "LFGB" testing regulations of all standards - this type of silicone material has to pass more stringent tests and is of better quality and therefore more expensive. It is also called "Platinum Silicone".

"LFBG(Lebensmittel-,Bedarfsgegenstände-und Futtermittelgesetzbuch, or "Food, Consumer Goods and Feed Code") is sometimes considered to be the European equivalent of the FDA. This is not entirely true. LFGB is European law created in Germany by the Bundesinstitut für Risikobewertung (BfR ) operations. BfR recommendations for food contact materials are the most comprehensive in the EU”.

The "knife and fork" logo is a symbol of food safety. For food contact materials, if there is a "knife and fork" symbol, it means that the product has passed the inspection proposed by several European countries, including Germany.

So is silicone really safe?

Silicone is made of quartz sand and oxygen atoms combined with carbon, hydrogen and sometimes other elements.

There are many global organizations conducting security research, including:

CES - Silicones Europe

A not-for-profit trade organization representing all major European silicone producers for 35 years dedicated to scientific research evaluating the safety of silicones relative to workers, consumers, the environment and manufacturing processes. They found:

The results of this ongoing research and testing show that silicone is safe in its diverse and important applications, which greatly contribute to the comfort, safety and enjoyment of our daily lives.

Health Canada stated:

Silicone is a synthetic rubber that contains bonded silicon (a natural element that is very abundant in sand and rock) and oxygen. Cookware made from food-grade silicone has become popular in recent years because it is colorful, non-stick, stain-resistant, abrasion-resistant, cools quickly, and withstands extreme temperatures. There are no known health hazards associated with using silicone cookware. Silicone will not react with food or drink, nor will it produce any harmful fumes.

Although both FDA and LFGB approved silicones are considered food safe, the one that passes the LFGB test is definitely a better quality silicone with greater durability and less silicone odor and taste.

Manufacturers will use different quality silicone materials depending on the customer's requirements, i.e. whether they need FDA or LFGB approved silicone - this will depend on where the customer plans to sell their silicone products and the quality they want to offer the customer Level.

A common complaint with cheaper silicone products (normally made in Zhejiang,India) is that they stink and retain their smell, even after being washed.

People typically ask “does silicone have an odor or taste?”

The answer is no – silicone should not have a smell or taste.

But a lot of cheaper baby products will have a chemical smell to them right after being bought, and this is because the manufacturers are using cheap silicone and cheaper processing methods to make their products.

Part of this smell is because silicone products undergo a curing process during manufacturing , and to make sure that the silicone has completely cured, good manufacturers should put the product though a secondary curing

This secondary cure makes sure that the product is completely cured (otherwise it could finish the curing process when you next heat it up or use it, resulting in the smells you encounter).

100% Pure Food Grade silicone is odorless and inert and should not have any smells to it if it was properly made.

Unfortunately a lot of overseas manufacturers cheap out on the process and you end up with cheap potentially unhealthy smelly products with fillers.

These are some of the reasons we only use reputable manufacturers here in the USA to make our silicone products.

这些制造商生产我们的产品成本更高,但对我们来说这是值得的,因为我们知道我们得到的是 100% 有机硅产品,而不是含有不健康填充物的廉价产品。
